On October 17, a flat on the sixth floor of the Swapna Nagari Complex was burgled.

The owner of the flat, Srikant Thakkar, 55, who works in a private company, lives with his wife and 27-year-old daughter. Prakash, an agent in the steel business, was well acquainted with the family.

Thakkar and his family had gone to attend an engagement ceremony when the incident took place. When they returned at 11pm, they found that the lock on the steel cupboard in the bedroom had been broken. Gold ornaments worth Rs 10.7 lakh and Rs 95,000 cash was missing.

They filed a police complaint. The police believed that the burglar had used duplicate keys to open the safety door as well as the main door of the flat.

On Monday, the crime branch got a tip-off about Prakash’s involvement in the crime and arrested him. Valuables worth Rs 15.37 lakh were recovered from him.

Prakash told the police that he was heavily in debt and had seen jewellery and cash lying in Thakkar’s house.
He had made duplicates of the door keys six months ago, the police said.
