A metropolitan magistrate on Monday sent Shashank Rane, 33, to jail after he was arrested last week for allegedly promising to marry a 20-year-old woman and raping her for the last six months.
The victim is reportedly five-months pregnant, police said. The police said Rane first called the victim on her cell phone in May this year and asked her to meet him.
“Rane called the victim claiming that he got her number from a common friend and that he wanted to meet her. They met near Gamdevi temple on Dockyard road in May for the first time when he instantly proposed marriage to her,” said inspector Manoj Saindre.
Rane allegedly began a physical relationship with the girl under the pretext of eventually marrying her, the police said.
“They frequented the Ganesh Prasad Guest house in Thane and she had also invited him to her residence on several occasions,” added Saindre.
When the victim got pregnant in July, she asked Rane to marry her and he declined saying that he was a Hindu and she belonged to the Scheduled Caste, the police said.
“The girl registered a case with Bhandup police station on November 25. The case was transferred to Byculla on November 26 because the area falls under our jurisdiction. We caught Rane on the same day and booked him for rape,” said Saindre.
Rane was produced before the Mumbai magistrate’s court on November 27 whereby he was remanded to police custody until Sunday. After being reproduced before the court on Monday, he has now been remanded to jail until December 19.
The victim, according to the police, lives with her mother, who works as a house-help, in Ganesh Murti Nagar at Colaba.
