Laxman Vishwakarma (22), a resident of Nepal Galli in Mulund, was arrested for reportedly killing his elder brother, Ram. On Monday, Ram, who was allegedly drunk, was assaulting his wife and mother over a domestic dispute.

The family said Ram often indulged in fights. He picked up fights with members in the neighbourhood without any reason, the neighbours said.

When Ram was assaulting his wife on Monday, Laxman, intervened after which, Ram allegedly punched him, said the police.

“This led to a fight between them. In the spur of the moment, the accused assaulted his brother with a kitchen knife,” said Deputy Commissioner of police R. Vhatkar. The locals rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.

As Ram allegedly consumed alcohol regularly and did not take care of his family, Laxman took their responsibility instead, said the locals.

Ram had broken Laxman’s new bike on Saturday night, which may have led the accused to have a grudge against his brother, the police sources said.
