An unemployed banker killed his wife and two teenage daughters before hanging himself to death in their Bhayander flat. The incident came to light on Saturday as the Agnihotris' neighbours called the police after a foul stench started emanating from their flat.

Deepak Agnihotri, 48, was found hanging from the ceiling while his wife Jharna, 45, and daughters Prerna, 20, and Chandana, 16, were lying dead in the bedroom.

The police suspect that Deepak smothered his family to death before committing suicide himself.

A suicide note, ostensibly written by Deepak, read that he was unable to provide for the family owing to his prolonged unemployment and as a result he had decided to kill them and commit suicide.

“It is a case of murder and suicide,” said Dinkar Pingle, senior police inspector, Navghar police station.

Deepak, a former employee of a public sector bank, was sacked about a year ago for clearing a loan without processing valid documents. “He had moved court against the sacking but was unable to sustain the legal battle,” said a police official.

This is the fourth such case of mass suicide by a family from the city this year. In March, Nidhi Gupta, a 32-year-old chartered accountant, pushed her two kids from the 19th floor of her building before jumping to her own death.

Similarly, a Mulund family of four, comprising two minors, was found hanging from the water pipe of their building terrace.
