A fight between three brothers over property got ugly when one of them sold off a garage at a prime location in Malad and then planted “explosives” inside it hoping to get his brothers arrested.
According to senior police officers, the brother who sold the garage near Sabkuch Mall in Malad is identified as Imran.
Sources said preliminary investigations show the explosives could be ammonium phosphorous and may have been sourced from Malegaon.
“We have sent the explosives for a further chemical analysis,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media. He said investigators would have more information by Thursday. Imran has been arrested, he added.
The officer said a property dispute led to the incident. “One of the brothers had sold the property to a local man and wanted his brothers to vacate the garage. So, he came up with the idea of planting the explosives,” the officer said, adding that Imran then called up the police informing them about the presence of explosives in the garage.
“A local alert was issued after we received the information and our teams rushed to the spot and recovered the explosives,” he added. Another officer said the matter was being taken seriously as explosives had been brought into the city.
“We are investigating the matter. But, due to the involvement of explosives the Anti-Terrorism Squad is also looking into the matter. So, we cannot disclose any other details at this time,” said Shamsher Pathan, the senior police inspector at Pydhonie police station, where the case is registered.
