The Vikhroli police arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly raping a mentally challenged 65-year-old woman at her slum home in Vikhroli, late Thursday evening.

The police suspect the accused, who is the victim’s neighbour, was drunk at the time.

The incident came to light on Thursday night in the Tagore Nagar area of Vikhroli when the victim’s relative spotted Suresh Ingle enter her hut.

Half-an-hour later when Ingle came out of the house, the victim’s relatives went to her house and found her without her clothes on, an officer from Vikhroli police station said.

They then approached the Vikhroli police.

According to the police, Ingle, in his statement, said he was passing by the victim’s house and saw the door to her hut open.

He said he entered the house and raped her, claiming some youngsters from the area had also raped the victim in the past, added an officer from the Vikhroli police, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Senior police inspector of Vikhroli police station S Gaikwad said, “Ingle was known to the victim’s relatives, so they were initially hesitant to approach the police.”

Ingle has been remanded in police custody till March 22.
