The police on Thursday, arrested a 24-year-old unemployed man for allegedly attempting to murder a 20-year-old housewife in Andheri (East) by setting her house on fire.
The police said the accused, Roshan Bagde, sought revenge as the victim had registered a complaint against him two days before for allegedly making obscene gestures at her. Bagde was arrested and released on bail. However, no attempts were made to provide police protection or any security to the woman.
Bagde, a school drop-out, allegedly locked her first floor room from outside, threw kerosene from a small opening and set it on fire using a match stick. The victim, Supriya Dhanve, managed to douse the fire, but her saree was burnt. Police said she was not injured.
The MIDC police said the victim and Bagde are residents of the Ganu Narayan Chawl in Pump house area on Jijamata road. The incident took place at around 8pm on Wednesday when the victim was alone at her home.
Senior police inspector, Suresh Hujband of MIDC police station said, “We have arrested Bagde on charges of attempt to murder and he will be produced in a court on Friday.”
When asked if the girl was given protection or if the accused had been given a warning to stay away from her investigating official S Sagvekar said, “He was given bail and went to his residence. We did not predict that he would commit such an offence again, even after being arrested.”
