A 34-year-old man slashed a 19-year-old woman’s wrists with a kitchen knife in Vile Parle (West) around 8.30am on Sunday, when she was on her way to work at a call centre.

Hearing her screams, locals and police officers on patrol duty rushed to catch the man. He was finally apprehended after a chase of about 2 kilometres, the Juhu police said.

The woman has sustained grievous injuries and is currently admitted in Sion hospital, said the police.

The accused, Bachchu Ali Siraj Ali, has attacked two women in a similar manner in 2010, the Juhu police said.

While Ali has claimed he targeted the woman because she refused her advances, she has denied knowing him.

“It seems the attack was the result of a one-sided love affair. However, the accused is a serial offender and keeps changing his statement,” said an officer from the Juhu police.

The woman’s detailed statement will be taken after her condition improves, said the police. Her wrists are badly hurt because Ali tried to stab her and she grabbed the knife with her hands to protect herself, the police said.

She was initially rushed to Cooper hospital but after her condition worsened, was shifted to Sion hospital.

Ali works in a hotel in Vile Parle and resides in Nehru Nagar slum, Vile Parle (West). The police said he had returned to the city three months ago from Kolkata, after he was externed for attacking another woman in 2010. According to the police, Ali is married but his wife left him a few years ago. The 19-year-old lives in Juhu with her parents.

“Ali has admitted that he attacked the teen. He says he approached her but she did not return his advances,” said AL Satpute, police inspector at Juhu police station.

A case for attempt to murder under the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Ali.
