Man stabs girlfriend, attempts suicide

A 31-year-old man tried to commit suicide at a guesthouse in Dahisar (East) on Tuesday, after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend.

The couple was rushed to Nair hospital and are said to be in a stable condition.The Dahisar police have booked Vaman Sawant, an electrician residing in Virar.

According to the police, Sawant met Sapna Pillai, who works in Silent Bar in Borivli, during his visits to the bar, a few months ago. They had allegedly been having an affair.

Sawant is married and stays with his family. Pillai is a resident of Mira Road. The couple used to frequently meet in guesthouses in the area. Sawant had recently learnt that Pillai was having an affair with another man, police said, and he asked her to quit her job and gave her Rs3 lakh to buy a house and marry him.

“On Tuesday, at 1.00 pm, the couple met at Sanmaan guesthouse, to discuss their marriage, when an argument broke out between them, as Pillai refused to quit her job,” said Sunil Deshmukh, assistant commissioner of police, Dahisar area.

Around 2.45 pm, a waiter from the guesthouse heard some noises from their room. Suspecting foul play, the waiter went inside and found Pillai on the bed, injured, while Sawant was in the bathroom with injuries on his abdomen.

The waiter informed the guesthouse authorities and rushed the couple to the hospital.“The woman was injured on her abdomen, hands and elbows when she tried to stop Sawant from attacking her,” added Deshmukh.

Sawant has been booked for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons or means and attempt to commit suicide He will be arrested after he is discharged.
