Oshiwara police on Monday arrested a man for allegedly stealing cash and valuables worth over Rs 16 lakh from an airhostess living with his family as a paying guest.

The police said Ritu Sachdeva lived as a paying guest with real estate agent Mehmood Khan (34) and his wife and daughter.

Police records say on October 12, Sachdeva left for her hometown, Delhi, to spend Diwali with her family. When she returned on Sunday, she found the flat locked. Her attempts to contact Khan on his cellphone proved futile.

Sachdeva then reportedly opened the door with duplicate keys and found cash and valuables worth Rs 16 lakh missing from her cupboard, said a police official closely connected to the investigation. She then reported the matter to the Oshiwara police, and accused the Khans.

The police questioned a tempo driver whom some of the residents had seen ferrying Khan’s possessions from the building. The driver told police that he had been told to drop the goods off at an apartment in the Madh Island area at Malad.

“We laid a trap and arrested Khan on Monday,” said Police Inspector D Sankhe of Oshiwara police station. Cash and valuables worth Rs 13.5 lakh were recovered from him, he added.

The police said Khan, while confessing, had claimed he did it after suffering heavy losses in his business, and that he also needed the money for the medical expenses of his pregnant wife.
