An irate mob nabbed a 22-year-old man who was allegedly trying to kidnap an eight-year-old girl from Bhagat Singh Nagar in Goregaon (west), where a two-year-old boy was kidnapped and murdered around 10 days ago.

The residents handed over the accused, Rahul Bagile, to the Bangur Nagar police.

The incident took place on Sunday when Bagile, a resident of Malvani, spotted the girl and offered her chocolates. He then picked her up and was walking away when some locals noticed him. As they had not seen him in the area before, they suspected foul play, and caught him.

“Bagile was arrested and produced in court. He was granted bail on Tuesday,” said Ramesh Kadam, senior police inspector of Bangur Nagar police station.

On September 18, Prince Patel, 2, went missing from outside his residence located in the same area. His body was found lying near a creek 500 meters away the next day. The police first registered it as a case of drowning based on the post-mortem report. However, when the parents insisted it was impossible for their son to have covered the distance on his own, the police registered it as a case of kidnapping and murder.
