The Kurla Government Railway Police arrested Chotu Mandal, 19, who threw a four-year-old girl out of a passenger train, after he was discharged from JJ Hospital on Friday.
Mandal was produced in the railway court and has been remanded to police custody till December 13.
Mandal, who stays with his uncle in Kandivli, got agitated after he had an argument with the victim's father, Sameer Jamdade, over a seat in the Bhusawal Express on Tuesday.
In a fit of rage, he picked up the child, Sadhana, who was sitting on her mother's lap and rushed towards the door. Before anyone could stop him, Mandal threw her out of the moving train between Vidyavihar and Ghatkopar stations. He was thrashed by the other passengers and was admitted to the hospital. Sadhana is recuperating at Sion Hospital.
“Mandal was arrested as soon as he was discharged from the hospital,” said Dilip Gore, senior inspector of Kurla GRP.
Mandal changed his statements on several occasions and also said that he did not intend to throw the girl out. He claimed it was an accident as he had lost his balance.
