A Mankhurd resident was allegedly stabbed to death by one of his neighbours over a trivial issue on Thursday. The accused who was trying to flee from the spot was arrested by a police patrolling team a few minutes later.
The accused has been identified as Dhanraj Laxman (21), while the victim was Yusuf Sheikh (22), a sub-contractor of civic works.
The incident happened at a building near Lalubhai compound in Mankhurd. The police said Laxman and Sheikh did not get along and the duo had fought about a month ago over a trivial issue.
The police officials said that at the time of the incident, Shiekh was having an argument with his mother on the ground floor of the building. Dhanraj, who was standing at the balcony of the fifth floor of the building, heard their argument and interfered.
“This led to war of words between Sheikh and Laxman,” said Police Inspector A. Tejale of Mankhurd police station.
The officials said the accused then came down to the ground floor, carrying a knife with
him and stabbed the victim thrice. The relatives and neighbors of the victim rushed Sheikh to Rajawadi hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.
The officials said that Laxman tried to flee from the area.
“While he was trying to escape from the area, he was apprehended by a police patrolling team,” said another police officer, requesting anonymity.
The accused on being questioned reportedly confessed to the police that he was trying to run away after committing a murder.
