For the first time in Mumbai’s marathon history, the 2011 Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon will have it’s own anthem.
This year, “Mumbai ki daud bejod hai (Mumbai marathon is unmatchable)”, will be played to egg on runners along the marathon route.
“The marathon anthem has taken me by surprise,” said actor Rahul Bose, who’s The Foundation, a non-profit group, has been associated with the marathon for the past nine years. “It has been a long time since we heard a good anthem for a grand sport event. It is really catchy and people will remember it for a long time.”
Actor John Abraham, brand ambassador for the event, released the anthem recently. The song has been composed by percussionist Taufiq Qureshi in association with Saregama India Ltd, while singer Shaan has lent his voice to the song written by Rachna Dixit.
The brief given to Qureshi was that the anthem should infuse runners with the willpower to finish the race.
“The grandeur of the marathon event calls for an official song that represents the spirit of the people running,” Qureshi said.
“This marathon is beyond a mere race and the anthem is the voice of that message. The lyrics of the song are meant to inspire millions to join the run for a cause, and not merely to compete in a sporting event,” he added.
Several runners are eager to hear the anthem.
“I know that this year the marathon has an anthem but I have not heard it yet. It will be a good change from the Bollywood songs that are played at the marathon venue every year,” said Parag Doshi, who has participated in the last three marathons.
