The CST government railway police (GRP) will on Sunday hand over the 19-year-old boy accused of raping a 14-year-old girl to the Marine Drive police, as the incident took place in the latter’s jurisdiction. The CST GRP got one-day transit remand of the accused, Suraj Singh, to complete the transfer formality.
The CST GRP had arrested Singh late on Friday following a complaint lodged by the victim.
According to the GRP officials, Singh is a small-time cook by profession and had been staying in Mumbai since 2011. The police said he was looking for a job for the last couple of months. On Wednesday, Singh met the girl, the victim, who had fled from her residence on January 6 following a tiff with her mother over petty issues, at CST. Her 22-year-old friend was introduced to Singh by the victim.
“After striking a chord with the minor, the trio left toward Girgaum chowpatty. In the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, the accused raped the minor girl near a public toilet under Meghdoot flyover at Marine Drive. Her friend was sitting on the tetrapods nearby,” said Surendranath Deshmukh, senior inspector, CST GRP.
GRP officials said the initial probe had revealed that the duo had consensual sex. A rape case was registered as the girl is a minor and she had alleged that Singh had raped her.
The officials stated that during their conversation, the girl had told Singh that she had fled from her residence.
She resided at her aunt’s residence till Wednesday and later escaped from there. After learning this, Singh approached a volunteer of Bal Prafullata, an NGO, and told the volunteer about the girl.
The volunteers spoke to her, and she told them that Singh had raped her. The NGO then brought the duo to CST GRP where a case was registered late on Friday.
The police have booked Singh under Sections 366 (A) (procuring a minor girl), 376 (rape) and 34 (criminal act with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The friend of the victim is on the run. The girl has been handed over to her parents.
