If paintings are not your preferred choice to add colour to your walls, Khar-based graphic designer and illustrator Fiza Khan, 27, can make illustrations of your favourite cartoon character, mythological figure or graffiti for you.
Pick your image — be it the Pokemon character Pikachu or an illustration of Hindu deity Shiva — and she will recreate it for you on your wall.
Khan has always been interested in design. Twelve years ago, whilst in school in Los Angeles, she attended an eight-month illustration module conducted by Marvel magazine. “The module got me interested in graphic novel style illustrations and I knew then that this was what I wanted to do,” says Khan.
She first put this skill into practice eight years ago, when she painted one of the characters of the Bromeiliad Trilogy, a children’s book, on her brother’s wall to surprise him. Her brother’s and mother’s friend saw the work and wanted Khan to paint their walls as well. For the first few years Khan did it for free. “I was doing it for fun,” she says.
Eventually, a lot of people outside her immediate family and friend’s circle wanted Khan to illustrate on their walls and she started charging them for the work she did.
She is now a freelance graphic designer, an illustrator as well as a tattoo designer.

Every child, at some point, has been fascinated by cartoons. Illustrator Saakshi Vyas, a 23-year-old graphic designing student, takes that fascination further, by creating cartoons of people and incidents from her life.
For the past two years, she had been uploading these cartoons, created for her own pleasure as well as for her friends, on her blogs and promoting them on her Facebook page, called ‘In the middle of something’. Her blog is filled with cartoons of herself, which talk about her hobbies, the weather, social issues, her friends and the way she perceives life.
On April 20, she started capitalising on her skills and providing the service of creating personalised cartoons for people.
To create a cartoon of a person, all she needs is a picture or two and a brief about the person, and the cartoon will be ready in two days.
These cartoons can be printed on pillow covers, pajamas and socks. She also creates customised profile pictures for Facebook buffs.
What’s more, she can also create comic books based on the order.
“The cartoons are simple, yet they retain the beauty of art,” says Parakram Kakkar, a friend and a client of Vyas’s.
So go ahead and revisit your childhood fascination with cartoons, by turning yourself into one.
