The alleged rape of a 14-year-old mentally challenged girl was discovered after the family members found that the girl was pregnant.
The girl and her family are residents of Malwani in Malad. The Malwani police have registered a rape case against an unidentified accused, but no arrests have been made.
Assistant commissioner of police Jaywant Hargude said that after medical reports confirmed that the girl was pregnant, her father approached the Malwani police.
"We have registered a case of rape against the unidentified person. We suspect the accused took advantage of the fact that the girl is mentally challenged," said Hargude.
The police are having a tough time getting leads in the case, as the girl has been unable to give them any information.
"She is finding it difficult to tell us about the accused. We have to handle the case tactfully as the victim is mentally challenged. We may have to take help from counselors," said Hargude.
Police added that the girl was staying with her father and a younger brother at a slum in Malwani.
Her father was away at work for most of the day, and the accused may have taken advantage of this, said the police.
