Three persons were recently arrested by the Nehru Nagar police for allegedly raping a 24-year-old mentally-ill woman in Kurla. Police investigation revealed that the accused took advantage of the woman’s condition and repeatedly raped her over a period of time.

The victim stays with her brother and a sister, who is also mentally ill, at a slum in Kurla. The incident came to light after the victim’s brother, 18, learned that she was pregnant.

Medical reports confirmed the victim was six months pregnant after which her brother approached the police, who arrested Salim Shaikh, 22, Kalu alias Prashant Kamble, 23, and Salman Shaikh, 19, after the victim named them post several hours of coaxing.

“We have conducted a medical check-up on the victim. The accused took advantage of her and repeatedly raped her. The arrests were immediately made and further investigation is on,” said Bhimdev Rathod, senior inspector of Chembur police station and in charge of Nehru Nagar police station.
