The 20-year-old American national, Guninder Chehal, who had been reported missing from Malwani since Monday, was located at the American embassy.

According to the Malwani police, the commissioner of police received an SMS on Friday from the embassy informing the police that Chehal was at the embassy and is safe.

The girl was staying in Mumbai at the residence of her maternal uncle since December last year.

Chehal, according to the police, had been studying and doing a part-time job at Washington, US.

She had come to Mumbai on December 29, 2009 with her parents to attend her cousin’s wedding on March 14, 2010.

V.R. Andhale Senior Police Inspector of Malvani police station said the embassy had not revealed why she went there without informing her family.

“According to the norms of the embassy, we cannot force them to reveal the reason. However we are trying to find out from Chehal’s family why she went to the embassy,” said Andhale.

On Monday after the wedding of Chehal’s cousin, while her parents returned to Washington, she decided to stay back with at her residence of her uncle Jasbir Singh Bhullar.

He stayed with his family on the seventh floor of Vandana Apartments at Jankalyan Nagar in Malwani in Malad West.

Around 12.15 pm, the victim told her uncle that she was going to visit the gurudwara located near Gate No. 1 in Malwani and did not return.
