The body of a three-and-a half-year-old girl who was missing for the past 10 days was found on Sunday in a gutter, barely 50 feet away from her residence at Vakola. The girl, identified as Anjali Gupta, had been reported missing on January 19.

According to the police, locals from the Shastri Nagar area of Santacruz East spotted the body in an open gutter behind a public toilet. It was in a decomposed state because of which she could not be identified.

“We called the victim’s father Vineet Gupta, who identified the deceased as his daughter based on the clothes she was wearing, ” said police sub-inspector Sanjay Sagvekar of Vakola police station. The police said that there were no injury marks on Anjali’s body.

“Anjali had gone out to the Lal Maidan located some distance from their New Shakti Chawl residence to play. The gutter that did not have a cover, suspected to have been robbed by local drug addicts, lies between the chawl and the ground. We suspect that she must have fallen into the six-feet deep gutter on her way back home which resulted in her death,” said Sagvekar.

He added, “ We are waiting for the post mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death. We cannot rule out the possibility of murder.” The Vakola police have presently taken an accidental death report in the case.
