Studying commerce in Class 11 at Mithibai College, Vile Parle, seems to have been the most popular aspiration for junior college applicants this year.
According to data with the education department, out of the 1.98 lakh application forms received through the online admission process, 40,019 students listed commerce at Mithibai College as one of their options. RA Podar in Matunga came in second, receiving 37,525 applications for the commerce stream and Bhavan’s College in Andheri received 36,543 applications. The top three colleges in terms of number of forms received were all for the commerce stream.
“We offer more options within the commerce stream itself, and we have a flexible course,” said Swapna Durve, Mithibai College’s vice-principal.
Students had to fill in at least 35 college options this year — 15 as their overall preferences, 15 as their zone-wise preferences and five as their preferred colleges area-wise. The data indicates the total number of applications colleges received and not the preference listed by the students.
The most popular college for science was Ruia College. Ruparel College was second with 32,323 applications, while Somaiya College had 28,534.
St Xavier’s college received 23,504 forms for the arts stream, the highest this year.
