Marine Drive police have arrested independent MLA Bachchu Kadu on Wednesday after the legislator arrived at the police station and surrendered for assaulting the deputy secretary, general administration department, Bharat Gavit, inside the Mantralaya.
Deputy commissioner of police Manoj Sharma (zone 1) confirmed the arrest of Kadu and claimed that the probe is on.
The Marine Drive police have registered a case under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. He will be produced in court on Thursday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Mantralaya employees went on a strike to protest against the incident. The same day a case was registered against Kadu and his associate Ashok Jadhav, a clerk working with the public works department (PWD), for obstructing an officer from performing his duties.
According to the police, Kadu and his associate went to meet Gavit, in regards to the flat allotted to Jadhav.
Jadhav was the person on whose complaint the deputy secretary was assaulted by Kadu.
“Jadhav has been suspended and further course of action will be decided after conducting departmental proceedings against him,” said a senior official.
Kadu, an MLA from Chandrapur, had assaulted the deputy secretary for not giving positive report in favour of Jadhav.
Jadhav wanted an extension for residing at the government quarters despite having a flat allotted by discretionary powers of the CM.
An officer from Marine Drive police station said, “During the course of discussion the two argued with the officer following which Kadu assaulted Gavit. The MLA wanted the officer to allow Jadhav to reside in the apartment allotted to him, to which the officer declined claiming that it is against the rules. So after a heated argument Gavit was assaulted.”
