A 28-year-old model and television actor, Rinky alias Priyanshi Chowdhury, was found dead in her Goregaon flat on Thursday evening.
Chowdhury, who was residing on the fourth floor of Vallabh Society near Oshiwara bus depot, was found hanging in the kitchen of her flat by her boyfriend, Sahil Malik, 28 around 6 pm. Malik informed the police, and has been detained for questioning. There was no suicide note found.
The post mortem report states that death was due to asphyxiation, consistent with hanging, senior inspector Surendra Paithankar said.
Police said that Malik, who is originally from Kashmir, is a model, too. According to the police, Malik said he was painting the bedroom of Chowdhury’s flat and, as she was uncomfortable with the odour, he told her to stay in the kitchen and that he would inform her when the work was done. Around 6 pm the doorbell rang and Malik was handed over a courier package addressed to Chowdhury. He knocked on the kitchen door and when there was no response, he called Chowdhury on her mobile phone, but the calls went unanswered.
“Sensing something wrong, Malik broke down the door and found Chowdhury hanging from the ceiling. In a panic, he cut the rope and brought her body to the living room where he tried to pour water into her mouth. When she did not respond he first informed the Oshiwara police. Subsequently, the Goregaon police were informed,” Paithankar said.
Chowdhury’s body was first taken to a private hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. The body was later sent to Cooper Hospital for a post mortem. In Malik’s statement to the police, the couple had been in a relationship for a year and had been planning to get married. But, Malik’s former girlfriend, Shamli Jain, also a well-known model in Delhi, learnt about their marriage plans and contacted Chowdhury. “Chowdhury had been receiving calls and SMSes from Jain for the past 15 days. Some of the messages advised her against marrying Malik,” Paithankar added.
Malik said Chowdhury had confronted him and that he had convinced her Jain was his past. He said Chowdhury had been disturbed due to the calls and SMSes and may have taken the drastic step due to it.
Meanwhile, Chowdhury’s mother, Kanisha, who resides in Kolkata, told the police that her daughter was suffering from a heart ailment due to which she was very depressed.
“We have called Jain for questioning. A case of accidental death has been registered,” Paithankar added. Police said, Chowdhury was married to a Bollywood scriptwriter in 2005, but divorced him a year later.
