A couple of days after senior BJP leader LK Advani heaped praises on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and sought a greater role for him at the national level, senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu claimed that Modi was an excellent prime minister material. He, however, quickly added that there were other capable candidates for the top job in New Delhi and the prime ministerial nominee will be decided by the party.

“Modi is an excellent material for PM. However, we also have other capable candidates within the party,” BJP national general secretary said at a press conference on Thursday.

Naidu said that the decision to project anyone as the prime ministerial candidate does not arise as next general elections will be held in 2014. “We will announce the name at an appropriate time and it will be a collective decision by the party,” he said.

Advani on Monday had also hinted at a greater role for Modi in running the party when asked about the prime ministerial candidate and probable faces who could lead the party in the near future.

Naidu said that Advani’s proposed yatra was likely to begin in October, will cover all important states and conclude on November 19. “We are still working out the details of the yatra. It will start in October and will finish before November 19, just before the winter session begins.”

Naidu also lashed out against the Communal Violence Bill and claimed that if enacted it would affect the federal structure of the constitution.
