The cream of the CAT crowd is from Maharashtra. Of the 1,888 candidates who scored 99 percentile and above in CAT 2010, 329 are from the state. Delhi has the next largest segment of high-scorers with 261 candidates.
All candidates, who have a score of 99 percentile and above, make it to the shortlist of the Indian Institutes of Manage-ment (IIMs).
Three of the eight toppers with a percentile score of 100 were also from Maharashtra.
“A majority of these students (92.69%) are from an engineering background. The next largest chunk, just 2.65%, is from the commerce stream,” said Himanshu Rai, CAT convenor. “There are only eight people who are from the humanities background in this lot.”
Just like the applicant base, the male-female ratio among the high scorers is also skewed. Only 177 of the top scorers are girls. In Maharashtra, of the 329 high scorers, only 22 are girls. Delhi has a better ratio with 37 of the 261 candidates being girls. Only 10% of the student population in the IIMs is female.
