Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Devendra Phadnavis on Tuesday slammed the state government for shortchanging the farmers and misleading the House by announcing a Rs 2,000 crore compensation but failing to keep this promise. “The governor, in his speech, made reference to this Rs2,000 crore compensation. But, where has the government spent or disbursed this money. They have even misled the governor,” he said.

Phadnavis, who was speaking on the governor’s address, said the government had, until March 15, disbursed only Rs120 crore of the compensation meant for farmers cultivating cotton, paddy and soya bean on 75 lakh hectares of land.

While the state government has made provision for Rs1,585 crore in its supplementary budget, only Rs120 crore of the money has been spent. He pointed out that unless the farmers got the compensation on time to recover their losses, the compensation announcement was a sham.
