Three-month-old Ahuti’s mother Dharmishta Joshi, who was arrested on Thursday for killing the infant, has shown remorse for the crime, stating that she assaulted the child in a fit of rage and did not know that it would kill her.

Dharmishta was remanded in police custody till October 12 after being produced before a metropolitan court on Friday. The role of Ahuti’s father Kalpesh is being probed, the police said.

Dharmishta, a homemaker, admitted to the crime after she was grilled for six hours at Borivli police station on Thursday along with Kalpesh, his sister Sheetal and the masseuse who was hired to massage Ahuti.

In her statement to the police, Dharmishta said that the child accidentally fell off her hands on September 21, following which her husband reprimanded her. On September 23, while Kalpesh was not at home, Dharmishta got infuriated by the baby’s incessant crying since the fall and crushed its head, and then the body, fracturing her ribs, following which the baby stopped moving.

Dharmishta did not tell Kalpesh about the incident fearing rebuke and got the girl admitted to Shivani hospital in Borivli, from where she was transferred to KEM hospital.

“We have not given Kalpesh a clean chit yet as we cannot draw a conclusion solely on Dharmishta’s confession,” said an official from Borivli police station. “She is regretting her act and has said that she did not know it would claim the child’s life,” he added.

“We will also probe the death of Ahuti's twin sister who died 12 days after birth. We will have a discussion with doctors at Wadia hospital where the twins were born," said Bhagwan Chate, senior inspector, Borivli police station.
