Suspecting her involvement in the murder of Malwani resident Gulabi Chi, 48, on Saturday, the police detained prime accused Javed Shaikh's mother (name withheld) on Monday.
Narayan Ugale, police inspector, Malwani police station, said: "We suspect that Shaikh's mother was involved in the crime. However, we will be to ascertain her role only after the interrogation."
Chi's body was found lying near Danapaani beach in Malad (west) on Saturday.
Under the pretext of purchasing goods from the grocery store, Chi left her house on Friday night. When she did not return for long, her family lodged a missing person's complaint.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Chi, who was in need of money, told Shaikh's mother that she wanted to pawn her gold jewellery.
Claiming that he would direct her to the appropriate person, Shaikh asked Chi to accompany her.
They hired an autorickshaw and on their way, Shaikh's accomplice also joined them. The duo allegedly strangulated Chi in the autorickshaw and then dumped her body after removing all the ornaments.
From a tip-off, the police learnt that Chi was last seen with Shaikh following which he was detained on Sunday evening.
On interrogation, Shaikh reportedly confessed to committing the crime.
"The search for Shaikh's accomplice is on. Shaikh is not cooperating with us. We will be able to figure out the exact sequence of events only after the aide's arrest," added Ugale.
