A motorbike and an autorickshaw were set on fire by an unidentified person in Tilak Nagar area of Chembur late on Saturday. According to the police, the incident took place around 1am on Saturday near Gyaanyogi Budhvihar, located on PL Lokhande Marg in Chembur.

The complainant, Ratnakar Gavare, a small-time businessman, told the police that a Hero Honda Passion and an autorickshaw were parked outside his residence at the above-mentioned place.

According to Gavare, an unidentified person set the two vehicles on fire, and also tried to set the meter box of Gavare’s neighbour ablaze. The police said that, however, the locals had come out by then on seeing the flames rising from the two vehicles.

The accused managed to flee from the spot, the police said. Gavare and the locals called the fire brigade and also alerted the police. By the time the fire was doused, the two vehicles had burnt to ashes and the meter box was partially damaged, the police said.

The Tilak Nagar police, who are investigating into the matter, have registered a case of causing damage to property against an unidentified person. The police are ascertaining whether there had been a parking row in the area, especially at the spot.

“We are also trying to find out whether Gavare has enmity with any person who can commit such an offence,” said R Gavit, senior police inspector of Tilak Nagar police station.
