Deepika Parmar has not uttered a single word since Tuesday and has been wearing a blank expression on her face.

The Dahisar housewife was taken to the hospital’s psychiatric department on Wednesday, where doctors tried to coax her into talking. “We immediately started her consultation, but she was not willing to speak,” said Dr Shubhangi Parkar, head of psychiatry.

“We are keeping a close watch on her and the boy twin, to prevent any further harm. We won’t push her to talk as she could be traumatised,” Parkar said. Doctors will conduct a psychological analysis to ascertain if Deepika has postpartum disorder, where women slip into depression after delivery.

“She is neither speaking nor eating,” Deepika’s mother Lilaben said. She and her husband came from Ahmedabad after hearing about the incident.

Deepika’s had a miscarriage, her mother said, then lost a three-day-old girl before she delivered premature twins in September. Deepika has also been unable to breastfeed the twins. “She and her husband are poor and have spent more than Rs 2 lakh on the twins’ treatment,” said Deepika’s father Gowindbhai Darji. “I have lost my girl,” said Deepika’s father-in-law Chandubhai Par-mar about his granddaughter.

The boy twin and Deepika were shifted to ward number one late Tuesday night. “Ward number one has a paediatric ICU. We shifted them for more vigilance and security,” said Dr N D Bhonsale, deputy dean, KEM.
