A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by six men at a lottery centre at Tilak Nagar early on Wednesday. This is the third gang-rape in and around Mumbai since February and the second in the city since August 1.

The Tilak Nagar police arrested the six after a tip-off from an autorickshaw driver. They have been charged with gang-rape under the Indian Penal Code and sections 4 (penetrative sexual assault), 8 (sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment) of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, 2012. All six have been remanded in police custody till August 13.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that one of the six knew the minor. “He called her to the lottery centre where he and five other men, all in their early 20s, drank alcohol with her,” said an officer at Tilak Nagar police station.

After getting the girl drunk, the three of the six allegedly took turns raping her. They were spotted by an alert rickshaw driver, who informed a police team patrolling the area. The officer said, “The girl was unconscious when she was rescued. She was admitted to a nearby hospital while the six accused were arrested. Preliminary investigations have revealed that three of them raped the girl before the police got there,” said the officer.

The police added that at least two of the accused had been hired to work at the lottery centre, which was to be inaugurated on Wednesday, and that all six live in the same area as the girl. Their names are being withheld to protect her identity.

“The girl was sent for a medical examination, which confirmed that she had been raped. The six accused were also given medical examinations. The rickshaw driver is an important witness, and we have also collected evidence from the room in which the girl was raped. We have ample proof,” said the officer.

The police said the girl has since regained consciousness and is undergoing treatment.
