The Azad Maidan police on Thursday arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly sending obscene text messages and his nude photographs through an instant messaging app to a 50-year-old south Mumbai resident.
The complainant, who lives in Dhobi Talao and works as a senior executive in a bank, said the accused started sending her the messages on March 30.
The arrested accused has been identified as Shomi Pradipkumar Sharma, a Powai resident, who works as an investment counsellor with another bank in Goregaon (East).
“The accused sent his nude pictures to the woman, harassing her. After the woman lodged a complaint, we traced the accused using his mobile number,” said an officer from the Azad Maida police station.
During interrogation, the accused said the woman had an account with his bank and that he acquired her number after she visited the branch once. However, the complainant told the police that she does not have an account with his bank and has never visited the branch too.
“We are not buying Sharma’s claims and trying to establish how he managed to get her number. We are also probing if he got it from her social networking profile,” another officer said.
Sharma has been booked under sections 354 A (sexual harassment) and 354D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and 67A (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.
A local court on Friday sent him in judicial custody,” said Narendra Singh, senior inspector, Azad Maidan police station.
