A 37-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly assaulting his wife and trying to set her ablaze in Andheri (East).

According to the Sahar police, the incident took place when the woman asked the accused for money to pay for their son’s classes. The victim resides in Ashok Nagar, Marol, with her husband and son. While the accused works as an electrician, the woman is a housewife, the police said.

According to the police, the couple had a fight in the morning over a trivial matter, over which the husband had assaulted her. Later in the afternoon, the accused returned home from work in a foul mood.

“The victim then asked her husband for money for their son’s tuition fees. The accused refused, but got angry after she kept asking him. In a fit of rage, he poured kerosene on her,” said Prashant Marde, senior inspector at Sahar police station.

According to the police, when the accused started searching for a matchbox, the victim ran out of the house and alerted the neighbours. The neighbours brought the situation under control.

“The neighbours then took the accused to a police station. After registering the victim’s statement, the husband was arrested under the charges of attempt to murder,” said another police officer.
