A 25-year-old autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly killing his 14-year old neighbour.

The boy was electrocuted in his house in Malwani, Malad (West), in August this year. Initially, a case of accidental death was registered, but after investigations and medical opinion, Anwar Shaikh Mandal was booked for murder.

“Probe revealed the accused had intentionally put the naked electric wire in the boy’s house, leading to his death,” said Prakash Patil, senior inspector, Malwani police station.

Mandal and the boy’s parents are neighbours in the Ambujawadi area of Malwani and have been locked in a property dispute for long, said a police officer.

In August, Mandal had threatened to kill the minor’s parents.

Later that month, they went to their native place, leaving the boy in the city to ensure Mandal did not capture their house, police said. On August 12, when the boy came home after having dinner at a relative’s house, he touched the wire in his room and was electrocuted. “Mandal was the first person who visited the police station to report the death,” said Patil.

“The boy’s parents did not take him to their native place, fearing Mandal would take over their house. Once they returned to Mumbai, we recorded their statement. Further investigation is on,” said a police officer. The police have registered a case of murder against Mandal.
