The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), embarrassed by the row over 10,000 files going missing from its building proposals department, will soon launch a system that will help check illegal constructions.

The corporation will be starting a website where one can report unauthorised constructions, violation of FSI rules or illegal alterations.

Citizens can upload pictures, videos or documents and register a complaint against a structure.

Once a complaint is reported, officials will have to attend to the problem within a stipulated time, which the system will keep a track of.

If the official fails to act, he could face a penalty or suspension, a source said.

In a major move to curb illegal construction in the city, the system is expected to bring corrupt civic officials and other parties under the scanner.

“We will be launching the website in a few wards as a pilot project, after which it will be replicated across the city,” said Sitaram Kunte, commissioner, BMC.

“This will ensure more transparency. To ensure safety, the name of the complainant will be withheld,” a source said.
