A 35-year-old builder was killed when two unidentified men opened fire at him in Nalasopara (East) on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the police, Rajesh Singh was walking towards his office located in Sainath Nagar around 12.15pm when the bike-borne assailants shot him in the head.
Policemen suspect the duo may have studied the area before attacking the builder.
According to the eyewitnesses, as soon as the assailants spotted Singh, they shot him in the head from point-blank range.
The firing created a commotion in the area, taking advantage of which, the duo managed to flee, the police said.
“We have some leads in the case. However, we cannot reveal the course of the investigation at this juncture,” said Suvez Haque, superintendent, Palghar police station.
“We are probing if Singh was attacked because of a personal dispute or a business-related matter,” added Haque.
Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
A case of murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Indian Arms Act has been registered against unidentified people at the Nalasopara police station.
“We are questioning the locals residents to see if anyone saw the duo. We are also looking for CCTV footages in the vicinity to identify them,” said Rajendra Badgujar, inspector, Nalasopara police station.
