An assistant police officer attached to the anti terrorism cell, Chandrakant Mahajan, 42, allegedly shot himself with his service revolver at the Chunabhatti police station on Wednesday. He is in a critical condition.

A preliminary probe pointed to a domestic dispute. Police said he was depressed after his wife had taken their two children and left home over a fight that morning.

In the afternoon, Mahajan had attended a meeting with the assistant commissioner of police over some corruption allegations against him, said Lakhmi Gautam, deputy commissioner of police.
