A drunken man allegedly snatched a 10-year-old girl who was playing with her siblings outside her house on Sunday and molested her for two hours before she was rescued.

A train commuter came to her rescue when the child raised an alarm, Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP) officials said.

The commuter handed over the man, identified as Sayyad Ashraf Sayyad Ashfaq, to GRP officials at Currey Road station.

On Sunday, around 4.30pm, the girl was playing with her two brothers outside her house in Shivaji Nagar, when Ashfaq picked her up and took her to Govandi station in a rickshaw.

S Shaikh, sub-inspector of Dadar GRP, said, “Ashfaq told the girl to come with him to Byculla zoo and when she refused, he covered her mouth with his hand, picked her up and flagged down a rickshaw. After travelling to Govandi, he took a Harbour train and alighted at Kurla, following which he took a slow train to CST.

“Ashfaq is a zari worker while the victim’s father works at Byculla,” police said.
In her statement to the police, the child said Ashfaq molested her all the while.

“She told us that when she raised alarm, people just watched but nobody helped her,” Shaikh said. The victim’s call for help was finally heard by a fellow commuter – Sanjay Patil – in the CST-bound slow train.

The girl told him that Ashfaq was forcibly taking her with him, following which Patil took Ashfaq to an on-duty policeman at Currey Road station.

“When the constable spoke to the girl, she revealed what had happened, following which Ashfaq was brought to Dadar GRP station.

He was drunk and when questioned, he admitted to molesting the child,” Shaikh said. The police, meanwhile, informed the girl’s mother, who arrived at the police station soon after.

“The accused lives in the same area and knew the victim’s father,” said Pravin Prabhu, sub-inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station.
