Irked with their madrassa modernisation scheme being called “votebank politics” by the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Mahrashtra Congress party slammed the saffron combine on Thursday.

Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said that the BJP had taken up similar schemes in Gujarat and at the Centre earlier.

“There seems to be a difference of opinion in the BJP leadership. In his party manifesto for 2012 elections, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi had listed a similar madrassa modernisation scheme. This is hypocrisy,” said Sawant.

He asked why the state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis did not call the move by Modi unconstitutional.

Sawant said that during the NDA regime, then human resources minister Murli Manohar Joshi had said that the government was in favour of introducing subjects such as maths, science and sociology in madrassas.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), an ally of the Congress, however, attacked the minorities department. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said that the implementation of the state’s and Centre’s schemes for minorities was poor.

He, however, clarified that the party was in favour of allocating Rs10 crore for modernisation of madrassas in the state.
