Cop caught accepting bribe

The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has arrested a police inspector from Raigad for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.

The inspector was taken into custody from his car, where he had taken the bribe, ACB officers said. A Rolex watch worth Rs 3 lakh, Marc Jacobs sunglasses worth Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 cash were found inside the car.

“The complainant, a resident of Raigad, was involved in adulteration of furnace oil till around six months ago. The accused Avinash Patil, an inspector in the local crime branch, told him he could continue with his illegal business if he paid Patil Rs 2 lakh every month,” said an ACB officer.

The complainant went to meet him in the police station, but the inspector passed him a written note, asking him not to discuss the bribe demand, ACB officers said. Subsequently, the complainant approached the Mumbai ACB.

“Patil communicated with the complainant through a written message, probably to avoid leaving evidence in the form of voice recordings,” the officer said.

On Thursday night, the complainant went to Patil’s office. “The officer did not accept the bribe in the office. He asked the complainant to leave, but made an another person accompany him. The complainant and the man left the police station on the former’s motorcycle,” said the officer.

After a while, Patil followed them in his car, said ACB sources. He asked the complainant to get in, and took the money from him, officers said.

“He may have asked the man to accompany the complainant to check if everything was in order. After giving Rs 25,000 to Patil, the complainant got down. Our officers followed the car and arrested Patil just as he reached his house,” the officer said.
