A police constable deputed to safeguard the women’s compartment in a Khopoli-CST local was arrested on Thursday for molesting a hawker in an empty compartment the night before.
The Thane government railway police arrested the accused and produced him in Kalyan court. The police found the constable had been booked in the past for molesting another woman.
According to the police, the accused, Simon Koli 45, is a police constable with the Karjat police station. While the complainant, 30, is a resident of Mumbra.
The police said Koli was on duty in the women’s compartment of the Khopoli-CST local, which reached Diva railway
station at 11:49pm on Wednesday.
“The woman claims she boarded the train at Diva on her way back to Mumbra and the compartment was empty. She said the police constable got into an argument with her on the pretext of asking for her ticket and then began touching her inappropriately on her face and other body parts,” said a police officer from Thane GRP.
“The woman got off the train and complained to the police officers stationed at Mumbra police. She was brought to Thane government railway police station, where she registered a case against the constable,” the officer added.
Koli was arrested late on Wednesday and was produced in Kalyan railway court on Thursday. “We found the accused has a record, and had been booked earlier in a molestation case. We are trying to get details,” said the officer.
A case has been registered at the Thane GRP station under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian penal code.
