The property cell of the Mumbai crime branch on Monday questioned a snooker player whose father is a member of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in connection with the sale of complimentary passes and tickets for Sachin Tendulkar’s last Test match, which was recently held at the Wankhede stadium.
Crime branch sources said that Chintan Zaveri, a member of the Bombay Gymkhana, whose f ather Pradeep is a member of the MCA, was questioned on Monday. Chintan is a (junior) national level snooker player.
Chintan’s questioning is connected to the arrest of accused Girish Premna who works as a marker for snooker tables at the Bombay Gymkhana.
Chintan, sources said, claimed he gave some passes to Premna in good faith as he had requested for them so that his family could watch the game.
Chintan was not aware that the passes would end up in the black market, he claimed before the crime branch.
Senior police i nspector Nandkumar Gopale confirmed they had questioned Chintan.
Others arrested in the case so far include Janak Gandhi, a member of the Garware Cricket Club, Ajay Jadhav - who works as a marker at the Islam Gymkhana and Abdul Rehman Anis Fatani - a member of Islam Gymkhana who runs a clothes store in Dongri.
From the investigations so far, the crime branch has concluded that Fatani had sent the tickets to Jadhav who in turn sold them to Premna. It was Premna who then took the tickets to Gandhi who found buyers.
Fatani also sourced tickets and passes from members of Islam Gymkhana who were not going to watch the match.
The MCA distributes complimentary tickets of international cricket matches to clubs connected with them.
The crime branch had laid a trap and had seized six VIP passes and 15 tickets last Wednesday. The complimentary passes were sold for Rs25,000 while other tickets were sold for Rs8,000 by the accused to the crime branch team in plain clothes.
