Costume assitant arrested

Malwani police recently arrested a 24-year-old assistant of a costume designer after a television actress found his phone recording her at a changing room in a Madh bungalow.

While the accused has been released on bail, the police are investigating if he had recorded other women in the past.

The incident came to light on July 8 when the 49-year-old complainant was in the changing room. She noticed the phone below the dressing table and informed a woman crew member. She told the police she thought someone may have forgotten their phone in the changing room. When the crew member handed the phone to the actress, she found that the video recording mode was on.

After she alerted other crew members and they learnt the phone belonged to Abdul Qayyum Ansari. In her statement to the police, the actress said she confronted Ansari, who eventually confessed to the offence.

The actress then approached the Malwani police, under whose jurisdiction the bungalow is located. The police have booked Ansari under section 354 (C) of the Indian Penal Code.

“The actress said when she checked the recent videos she found her recordings. The contents of the phone will be checked to ascertain for how long the accused has been recording her,” said an officer from the Malwani police station.

“We have registered a case of molestation following the woman’s complaint. The accused was placed under arrest soon after that. He was produced before a metropolitan court and the court released him on bail,” said Milind Khetle, senior inspector at the Malwani police station.

The police said they have recorded statements of those present in the room at the time. They have seized Ansari’s phone and officials said they will check the contents.
