Officers of the crime branch arrested a 42-year-old man on Saturday for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl in Vakola, Santacruz (East), on Thursday. After committing the crime, the accused had fled the area.
Officers of unit 8 of the crime branch received a tip-off that the accused was about to board a Gujarat-bound train from Borivli station on Saturday. The police laid a trap and arrested him.
Police sources said the girl lives with her parents, who have been living as tenants for the past few years in a house owned by the accused. The girl and her parents live on the mezzanine floor, while the accused lives on the ground floor.
According to the girl’s complaint, the man used to come to her house every day and touched her inappropriately. On Thursday, when the girl’s parents were out, he raped her, said a police officer.
“When the parents returned, the girl told them about the assault,” Deepak Phatangare, senior inspector, unit 8, said.
Her parents immediately approached the Vakola police station and registered a case against the man.
