Mumbai education

Rajesh Tope, the state’s minister for higher and technical education, speaks to HT about the administration’s plans to improve the way the Mumbai university functions. What is the status of the new Maharashtra Universities’ Act, 2011?

The file is with the planning and finance departments. It should be cleared soon so we can take it up in the July session. What happened to plans of splitting the university to ease the administrative burden?

There were three committee reports (on university reforms) The basic beginning of the process will be from the new act. That will be the first step. Does the state government plan to do anything if there are too many problems at the university?

The government has no role to play in administration. We have to intervene if there are lacunae or issues of non-performance. Ultimately, our focus is on students. There have been reports of various goof-ups in the exam season

There are some problems in the exam department. It needs to be properly governed.
