Mumbai gang-rape: accused's DNA samples match

In a major boost to the prosecution case against the five accused involved in the gang-rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai, the DNA found on the victim’s body matched with that of the accused, thereby proving that they had gangraped her.

Mumbai’s joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy, said it was a strong and crucial piece of evidence that will go a long way in proving the rape charges against all five accused.

Meanwhile, the crime branch added three sections pertaining to unnatural sex, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence to the case while producing three of the five accused before a magistrate on Friday. The three were further remanded to police custody till September 5.

However, fourth accused, whose custody also ended on Friday, was produced before Juvenile Justice Board, as his birth certificate showed he was a minor. He has been sent to remand home, where police are allowed to interrogate him till September 2.

Roy said, apart from the DNA match, the police have the mobile tower location of the accused to prove their presence on the scene of crime, eyewitnesses, technical and other evidence that would help them put a strong case against the accused.
