A 12-year-old student of a school in Dadar started to have panic attacks and underwent treatment for almost a year after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the school bus cleaner.
The girl, however, never told her parents or the doctors about the incident until three days ago, when she finally confided in a nurse.
An FIR was registered against the 29-year-old man, Kashinath Ghadigaonkar, on Sunday, a senior officer told HT.
He was arrested from Chunabhatti area later in the day.
The Class 6 student, who lives with her parents in Parel-Lalbaug area, said the incident took place in April last year.
In the complaint, the girl said she was alone in the washroom after school and the accused followed her and allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Traumatised, the girl did not tell her parents about the incident.
However, her parents realised something was wrong when she started to make excuses to skip school.
She also started to have panic attacks, and had to be taken to the hospital three to four times, the police said.
The girl finally spoke to a nurse about the incident, following which a complaint was registered.
The police picked up Ghadigaonkar from a playground and placed him under arrest.
He has been booked under section of 376 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
