Seven people, allegedly from a regional political party, on Tuesday assaulted a security guard and vandalised his cabin at the proposed Metro-3 carshed project in Aarey Colony in Goregaon (East).

Officials from the Aarey sub police station said the incident took place around 5pm.

The accused came in an Innova car, beat up and kicked the security guard, officials said. At the time of the attack, there was only one guard at the site.

“They broke the glass panes of the cabin and put up flags of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). We are investigating if they belong to the political party and whether the incident was an act of protest,” said inspector Diwakar Sawant, from the Aarey sub police station.

The security guard, Ravindra Gulgarg, was taken to a nearby hospital.

Officials said Gulgarg was able to notice the registration number of the vehicle. The police are also checking CCTV footage.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation managing director Ashwini Bhide said, “We are going to file a complaint against the people, who ransacked our office in Aarey Colony. Strict action will be taken against the miscreants.”

At the time of going to press, the police were registering a case. An officer said sections of rioting, assault and trespassing will be applied against the vandals.
