acid attack

A 21- year-old man allegedly attempted to force a 17-year-old girl to consume acid at Gorai jetty in Borivli (West) on Saturday. The girl, who sustained burns to her face, was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli and later shifted to a private hospital in Mira Road, where she is recuperating.

The police have arrested Jitendra Sakpal on charges of attempt to murder under IPC section 307. The Gorai police said that Sakpal and the girl, both residents of Kajupada area in Dahisar, were in a relationship but parted ways six months ago after the girl’s parents expressed displeasure over Sakpal’s wish to marry her.

On Saturday, Sakpal requested the girl to meet him and they went together to Gorai jetty, where an altercation followed around 4.15pm.

“The girl alleged that Sakpal forced her to consume acid. She raised an alarm after which people caught him. There were a few policemen and autorickshaw drivers neaby. The girl sustained 7-8% burns to her tongue, lips and face. She is recuperating,” said Mahesh Patil, DCP, zone 11.

The Gorai police said the girl’s father had complained about Sakpal to the Dahisar police a few months ago.

“The duo gave in writing that they will not meet again and the issue was sorted. However, the youth lured the girl into meeting him on Saturday,” said Deepak Bagawe, senior inspector, Gorai police station.

“The girl is a student while the accused has completed hotel management.” The police said Sakpal was furious as the girl had stopped talking to him.

The girl’s father is a Class IV BMC employee while the boy’s father is employed with a private firm, the police added.
