The Ghatkopar police arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting his three-year-old neighbour earlier this month.
According to the police, the incident took place on August 5 at a chawl in Ghatkopar (West). The accused, who does odd jobs, lured to the girl into his residence and allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Investigations revealed that the girl used to visit the accused’s house and his wife used to babysit her in her mother’s absence. The girl’s mother used to leave her with the accused’s wife if she had to go out for work.
On the day of the incident, the accused was alone at home. He allegedly brought the girl to his place and allegedly sexually assaulted her and then took her back to her home.
When the girl’s mother found her crying in pain, she took her to a doctor. On examining the child, the doctor suspected she may have been sexually assaulted and advised the family to approach the police.
The girl’s family approached the Ghatkopar police and a case was registered. Following investigations, they arrested the accused. The girl was sent for medical examination and medical reports confirmed she was sexually assaulted. “The accused was arrested and is lodged in jail,” said Venkat Patil, senior police inspector, Ghatkopar police station.
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO). The police are checking the antecedents of the accused and if he was involved in similar incidents in the past.
